WI-IL Border Region Fishing Report & Weekend Outlook 1/14/2015

Fox Chain of Lakes – Thanks To Triangle Sports, T-Bone Guide Service, Tony Boshold, & a few friends.

Ice reports are coming in around 10″ from most sources, but we can not emphasize enough to use caution, especially in current areas, springs, ditch inlets & areas of heavy salt runoff.  I your not familiar with a lake your going to fish ask! You can ask us on our facebook page, as well as any local facebook groups or call any of the local bait shops.

Fishing has picked up a little on the Chain & I think will only get better with stable weather moving in for the next 5 days or so. With the lack of weeds on the Northern lakes fish seem to roaming more which means if you want then plan on moving with them,  Most reports have been a consistent “SPOTTY” with mixed bags of Crappies, Gills, an occasional Walleye, Catfish & Drum while fishing the flats in 4′ -8′ ranges & and the 1st break off the larger flat basins down to 12-15′. Small jigs & plastics tipped with waxies & spikes working the best. Best fishing seems to be pre dawn into morning hours & late afternoons til dark,

On the Southern end of the chain decent reports of crappie in 12-14′ of water on tungsten horizontals & plastics, small pimples tipped with spikes/waxies with an occasional catfish & drum being caught.

Bangs Lake – 8 – 10″ of ice, Spotty to fair reports coming in, Decent sized Bluegills & Sunfish being caught along with mostly smaller crappie in 12 – 15′ ranges, small horizontal jigs with wedgies or other small plastics working best, dead stick & tip downs with small minnows for crappies also. A few small to medium pike coming in on tipups.

Lake County Forest Preseve Lakes – As of this post only two of the three LCFPD lakes where ice fishing is allowed are open, Banana Lake at Lakewood Forest Preserve & Independence Lake at Independence Grove Forest Preserve. in Wauconda. We have not received any reports from either lake this week. Sterling Lake at Van Patten Woods in Wadsworth is still closed due to inconsistent ice.

Kenosha County Reports

Most Kenosha County Lakes are coming in with around 10″ of ice.  Fishing has been tough but steadily improving, Lake Elizabeth, Camp Lake, Paddock Lake, Lake Andrea, & Powers Lake have all been giving up decent numbers of Crappies, with an occasional Perch, on a variety of small jigs, some days plastics wok best, next day spikes. Several nice Walleye picked up on Elizabeth, All lakes seem to be a deeper 12-20′ weed edge bite on flats adjacent to breaklines, Once your on the fish, mix up your presentations until you figure out what they want, I have been doing best with 1″ Northland Bloodworms on a tiny tungsten horizontal jig. reports of some Pike being caught on Camp Lake on tip ups in 5 – 8′.

Walworth County Lakes

Lake Geneva is just recently picked up enough ice in Geneva Bay, by Trinkes & now were hearing by Linn Pier, There is still some reports of open water on the west side, If I were to try it I would be sticking to Geneva Bay for now & go from there based on conditions. I have not heard any reports I consider reliable enough to post yet but have friends who will be out there this weekend & we will follow up.

Delavan Lake – Reports of 8 -10″ of ice in protected areas and 6″ on the southwest end, Also a lot of reports of very murky stained water, some kind of algae bloom or???  Fishing reports have been pretty slow the last few days, Lakelawn is now allowing parking & access for $5

Lake Michigan -A few Brown Trout and a few mixed in Steelhead being caught on automatic fisherman’s rigged with spawn sacs & Golden Roaches as well as Tip Ups in Kenosha & Racine Harbors.
